CHOICE Review

Brockner, a personality/social psychologist and faculty member at the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, has written this work on self-esteem in the workplace as a means of integrating results from his extensive research on the topic with a broad range of theories and findings of other researchers. The result is an interesting and stimulating, albeit somewhat esoteric, treatise on the ways in which employee self-esteem makes a difference in today's organizational settings. Although the practicing manager may find this difficult reading, the management scholar will likely conclude this book is a significant contribution to our understanding of organizational behavior. After introducing readers to his thesis that employee self-esteem may have important consequences for their work attitudes and behaviors, Brockner reviews relevant research findings on self-esteem, discusses the theoretical and practical implications of this research, and considers the antecedents of employee self-esteem. In the final two chapters, the author focuses on the maintenance and enhancement of employee self-esteem and presents a future research agenda for addressing additional questions about the role of self-esteem. All in all, a well-researched book that will have strong appeal for a limited audience. Graduate collections. -T. Gutteridge, Southern Illinois University--Carbondale
