CHOICE Review

Debates over social policy often are viewed merely as matters of personal preferences. Arguments as to whether one supports the death penalty or a right to welfare seem not to be subject to final examination or analysis. Yet for Brettschneider (Princeton Univ.), social policies and debates are fundamentally questions about theories of justice that can be rationally examined and discussed. This volume presents the case that questions of justice are relevant and core to political debate and that, contrary to postmodern theorists and those who believe in moral relativism, underlying principles of justice can guide even the most contentious political disagreements. In examining the death penalty, the author does a solid job of reviewing the basic claims for it, indicating why the evidence to sustain it is thin. Similarly, appealing to philosophical theories, she reviews the case for welfare and how one could support a right to it. Overall, while thin in its analysis, it is a good book for high school, first year college students, and the general public. Suitable for collections in criminal justice, social policy, ethics, and justice. D. Schultz Hamline University
