CHOICE Review

The editors of this volume have worked since the mid-1980s in the Children's Hospital of New Jersey, Newark, a city and community affected deeply by HIV/AIDS. Confronted daily by the challenges of the HIV epidemic, emphasis was initially placed upon the provision of basic medical services, but the mental health implications became evident as the enormity of the epidemic and its potential impact on women and families became evident. This book--the first to combine a psychosocial perspective with clinical case examples--focuses on the psychological and psychosocial issues of children and families. It introduces the Multisystems HIV/AIDS Model for the provision of effective service delivery and care of HIV/AIDS children and families. The model is family focused, culturally sensitive, and systems coordinated. The contributors offer a conceptual framework that orients the service provider to the medical, cultural, psychosocial, and mental health needs of HIV-infected infants, children, and adolescents; mothers and other relatives who are also infected with HIV/AIDS; and uninfected but nonetheless affected family members or other caretakers. Written by experts in the field, this volume is suitable for all libraries and should be included in every HIV/AIDS collection. All levels. J. M. Howe; VA Medical Library, San Francisco
