CHOICE Review

This condensed version of Encyclopedia of Energy Technology and the Environment, ed. by Attilio Basio (4v., CH, Sep'95), contains a wealth of information at less than a fourth the cost. The articles, written by experts in their respective fields, usually contain references, often provide related data, and occasionally have drawings. Very few of the articles are brief dictionary definitions; most go into considerable detail. For example, "Air Conditioning" is 12 pages long, "Air Pollution: Automobile" more than 30 pages. Although some articles could have been longer or differed in scope (e.g., "Hydropower" or "Lighting, Energy Efficient"), that is less a critique than recognition of editorial choices. The only stumbling block for some users is the regular use of mathematics in the articles. However, the entries are so well written that readers can skip the formulas and still get a tremendous amount of information. No other single-volume encyclopedia of energy or the environment comes close to the depth of information found here.
