CHOICE Review

The authors have produced a beautiful and well-organized book on the White House's fine arts collection. This is the first book to cover nearly all of the 450 paintings, prints, drawings, and sculpture that form the collection. The volume primarily consists of richly illustrated Presidential portraits, American landscapes, and seascapes in color and black-and-white. Paintings include works by Paul Cezanne and Winslow Homer. According to the preface, all the Presidents and First Ladies have contributed to the collection. Part 1 discusses the historical development of the collection. Part 2 includes selected works from the collection arranged in chronological order. Each illustration is accompanied by a detailed essay explaining its historical and artistic significance. The works are supported by notes and provenances, located at the end of Part 2. In Part 3, the catalog of nearly all works in the collection, the plates are reproduced in black-and-white, and documentation is provided for each work. This well-written book belongs in any academic library with undergraduate or graduate art history collections. V. Nance; University of the District of Columbia

Booklist Review

Although its official occupant, whoever he is, usually commands the hearty disrespect of two-thirds to three-quarters of enfranchised Americans (most of whom didn't even vote against him), there are some White House residents to take pride in. For, not counting prints, there are some 450 works of art in the executive mansion's collection. Among them are sterling paintings by Bingham, Kensett, Church, Bierstadt, Sargent, Eakins, Hassam, and Marin, to cite some famous Americans, and by Monet and Cezanne, to mention two of the few but first-rate Europeans represented, and excellent castings of Remington's bronzes The Bronco Buster and Comin' through the Rye. This luxurious album showcases nearly 100 pieces, each the only occupant of a full page and accompanied by a generous annotation. Before the artworks is a precis of the White House collection's history; after them, a black-and-white catalog of White House paintings, sculpture, and works on paper. A fine addition to museum and single collection monographs that's also good browsing for driving away the election-year blues. ~--Ray Olson
