CHOICE Review

Peru is a country in crisis. Few countries have experienced economic chaos as extreme as Peru's in the past ten years. Drug traffickers have links to the military and even presidential advisors; at the same time Peruvian society has been under attack by Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) the most violent and brutal guerrilla movement in Latin America. On April 5, 1992, the situation was further complicated when democratically elected President Alberto Fujimori staged an "auto golpe" or self-coup which shut down the representative institutions of Peruvian government. The international community responded negatively. Yet within Peru Fujimori's popularity rose dramatically. The chapters of this small, valuable volume are the revised papers commissioned for a conference on Peru at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. They are original work by some of Peru's leading scholars. Considering Washington's past priority of defeating the Shining Path as opposed to fighting the war on drugs, and considering that the 1995 Peruvian elections may well result in five more years of Fujimorism, all serious students of Latin American politics should put this book on their reading list.
