Publishers Weekly Review

Resulting from a landmark exhibition of Latin American photography in Zurich in 1981, this book endeavors to outline key historical points of Latin American photography, singling out key players and themes from its beginnings in the late 1800s through the early 1990s and introducing new photographers to the canon. The large-format monograph features an introductory essay by Billeter, an important scholar and curator in the photographic medium. Her essay provides historical context and a brief introduction to some of the featured photographers, including less familiar names such as Peruvian photographer Sebastián Rodríguez, whose work was featured for the first time at the Zurich exhibition. Organized chronologically and by theme, the photography shown is powerful and moving. Most of the images are black and white, though some color photographs taken later in the 20th century do appear. A highlight of this collection is a selection of images by female photographers, such as Lola Álvarez, wife of Mexico's most famous photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo, and Tina Modotti, whose photography is well known to have influenced surrealist artists. Also included is a compendium of short biographies of all the photographers featured in the book. Recommended for any academic or public library with a good Latin American studies or photography collection.-Laura Torres, Art & Art History Slide Lib., Tufts Univ (Mexico: Seen and Traveled)Ríos Szalay, Adalberto. The rich diversity of Mexico's people and landscape are breathtakingly captured by internationally recognized photographer Ríos Szalay, whose artistic excellence is showcased here. This chronicle of the last 35 years of his work begins with aerial photographs of deserts and lush tropical rainforests, includes encounters with people in ritual and dance, and ends with images of Mexico's cities. Szalay's strengths lie in his shots of buildings and architecture; the pictures of colonial churches, haciendas, and modern cities really exemplify the country's diversity. A few essays accompany the images but do not necessarily add to the book; the English translations provided are a little awkward but serviceable. Ríos Szalay also contributes a statement reflecting on his philosophical goals to be a witness with his photography and muses about his travels and the wisdom people shared with him. Overall, this is a lovely photographic overview of Mexico and its vibrant colors; not an academic book, it would be most suited for bookstores and public libraries.-Laura Torres, Art & Art History Slide Lib., Tufts Univ(c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
