CHOICE Review

The American short story has been neglected by scholars, so Benson's useful introduction to that segment of Stegner's oeuvre is particularly welcome. Fully a third of the book comprises reviews of Stegner's short story collections, which students of the American West and its literature will find especially useful because of Stegner's central position in the development of the genre. Stegner's life--growing up in North Dakota, Saskatchewan, Montana, and Utah and at Stanford University, where he directed the influential creative writing program--was central to his sense of place in the West. His fiction constantly juxtaposes the real place of the West with the dominate myth of the West, a juxtaposition here evident in discussion of the short stories. Stegner educated his readers about the real West. Benson (San Diego State Univ.) demonstrates that Stegner wrote many spectacular short stories, though he climaxed his career with a series of long works. This book is one of the best introductions to Stegner as a serious writer. Q. Grigg; formerly, Hamline University
