CHOICE Review

The rapid increase in the number of drug- and AIDS-affected newborns has serious consequences for health and social service providers and policymakers. Yet information is not shared among the professionals who provide services to HIV-positive persons and those who treat drug-affected clients. The importance of this volume lies in part in its attempt to bridge that gap by providing a multidisciplinary approach to substance abuse, particularly as it relates to HIV infection. The book is in four parts: an introduction to addiction and the problems of drug- and AIDS-affected infants and their families; prevention of substance abuse and approaches to prenatal care that help prevent drug-affected childhoods; services to families already involved with drugs; and legal and policy initiatives. The contributors are experts representing a broad cross-section of disciplines and agencies. Their experience in the research and practice of drug treatment, health care, family support services, law, and child welfare has led to the development of a framework that will have continued relevance not only as the nature of the AIDS epidemic changes, but as other epidemics emerge. A useful resource, especially for library collections with an emphasis on social services and/or AIDS. J. M. Howe VA Medical Library, San Francisco
