Insect overwintering is a fascinating process involving many physiological, epidemiological, biochemical and behavioural changes. The study of the overwintering process can offer an insight into the development of insects, as well as help us to predict the patterns of crop damage and insect-borne disease caused by some insect species. This book provides a comprehensive account of the various forms of insect overwintering and highlights important areas of economic interest. It will be essential reading for advanced students and researchers in the fields of zoology, agriculture, forestry and ecology.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 206-239) and index.

CHOICE Review

The most important feature of this book is its adoption of an ecological and physiological approach to the problem of insect overwintering. Although aimed at postgraduate entomologists, senior undergraduates in zoology, entomology, forestry, or agriculture will find this book eminently readable and well organized. The figures and tables are clear and informative, and the bibliography of more than 600 references is a useful resource in its own right. Both European and North American species are included in the discussions, and much attention is focused on economically significant pests. Survival of overwintering forms is shown to be a major determinant of population levels in the following spring and summer. A chapter on the overwintering locale shows that factors such as temperature, moisture, soil type, and snow cover in both macro- and microhabitats affect survival. The overwintering state is induced, maintained, and terminated by specific cues, both abiotic (photoperiod, temperature, and moisture) and biotic (nutrition and crowding). An excellent chapter on cold-hardiness summarizes the extensive literature on cold acclimation, freeze-tolerance, and freeze-avoidance by supercooling. The final chapters concern the costs and benefits of overwintering, and the current and future use of overwintering studies in applied biology. Advanced undergraduate through faculty. M. J. O'Donnell; McMaster University
