CHOICE Review

A superficial and somewhat biased account of the foreign (particularly Saudi Arabian and Egyptian) involvement in the civil war in North Yemen between 1962 and 1970. The author (who studied at George Washington University) is a deputy minister in the Saudi government. He argues that the coup d';etat of September 26, 1962, which initiated the civil war, was planned and executed by Egypt (and he incorrectly cites Manfred Wenner's Modern Yemen, 19181966, 1967, in support of this thesis). Saudi Arabia, by contrast, is portrayed as relatively disinterested, limiting its actions to ``moral and financial assistance''; of the forces of the deposed Imam of Yemen. The book is largely based on secondary (primarily Western) sources, with the exception of two personal interviews: one with the former Imam, the other with Mahmud Riad, former foreign minister of Egypt. No library will suffer unduly if this book is not on its shelves.-F. Tachau, University of Illinois at Chicago
