CHOICE Review

Although opposing viewpoints are common in our public and private communications, it is a rare event when the entire spectrum of opinions on an issue is found in the same volume. This is one of a series of books expressly designed to encourage critical reading and thinking skills by exploring and weighing a wide range of opinions that are typically part of the fabric of an open and diverse society. Issues related to global warming include the question of the reality and seriousness of the threat, the causes, possible effects, and suggested measures to combat or at least control radical changes in the earth's climate. Conflicting views are presented convincingly by well-known and articulate commentators, leading professionals, and some ordinary observers. The first four chapters present information and opinion by following an antagonistic format with logic that may also challenge readers to defend their own opinions. The fifth and final chapter departs from the confrontational format and simply offers six alternative ways to preserve a rain forest. It is, after all, difficult for anyone to argue for rain forest destruction! General readers; undergraduates through faculty; two-year technical program students. R. M.
