The bibliographic essays that introduce this book and accompany each chapter are excellent, offering some interesting insights into popular culture. Likewise, the descriptive detail provided for each film is very thorough. Unfortunately, the bibliography lacks the comprehensiveness one would like to find in a work of such limited focus. Certain sports (e.g., bullfighting) are omitted on no more substantial grounds than lack of interest on the part of the authors. The obvious omission of karate films is not even mentioned, although the Bruce Lee films are surely as significant as the surfer films that are included. The decision to include only spectator sports seems to have been ignored: handball, Ping-Pong, golf, and swimming films are included. The quality of Zucker and Babich's research is evident in the material that is presented, but the authors should have been more liberal in defining their field. Academic libraries.-T.L.
