CHOICE Review

A handbook providing up-to-date information on the diverse topics associated with the control, storage, treatment, and disposal of contaminants in air, water, and soil. Additional areas covered include risk assessment, the chemical analysis of regulated compounds, and pollution prevention through total quality management. Although each of the 11 chapters has a different author or series of authors, the writing style and quality is consistently high. Numerous tables and figures are found throughout and are particularly helpful. All chapters begin with an overview of the problem to be addressed, and most conclude with a summary and a list of recent references. The chapter "Geology and Groundwater Hydrology" is particularly interesting and contains a useful series of figures. (A one-page preface would have helped present a clearer picture of the handbook's purpose and focus.) An excellent introductory reference source for up-to-date discussions of environmental pollutants. Advanced undergraduate through professional. H. T. McKone; Saint Joseph College
