CHOICE Review

Described by its authors as "the first complete bilingual dictionary of librarianship, information science, media, educational technology, the book trade industry, and related fields printed in the United States," this work is designed to meet the needs of librarians who serve Spanish-speaking constituencies. It is organized much like any standard English-Spanish/Spanish-English dictionary. The first section lists English words and phrases alphabetically along with a corresponding Spanish word or phrase, followed by a short definition of the term. The second half lists Spanish terms, followed by the English equivalent, and a definition in Spanish. Prefaces and introductions are provided in both languages, and a topically organized list of commonly used longer phrases is appended. The book's primary value is to provide quick and easy translation phrases for terms relating to librarianship and associated disciplines. Its list of terms is very complete, almost overly simplistic. Some definitions are merely rearrangements of the phrase defined, (e.g., "office worker--a person who works in an office"), and some for complicated terms are too simple to be helpful. Despite its limitations, this book has value to Spanish speakers trying to understand the literature of librarianship from the US and for students and faculty in graduate library schools and graduate and undergraduate programs for school librarians preparing students to work in Spanish-speaking areas.
