There is no shortage of research methods that are easily applied to the study of everyday human experience. How, though, does one attempt to study extraordinary human experiences ultimate values and meanings, peak experiences, transcendence, and heightened awareness, among others? Authors William Braud and Rosemarie Anderson introduce a series of transpersonal research methods that are intended to help researchers develop new ways of knowing and methods of inquiry. While these methods will be of particular interest to researchers in transpersonal psychology, humanistic psychology, or transpersonal studies applied to traditional fields, the authors argue that these approaches with their emphasis on developing intuition, empathy, self-awareness can benefit anyone involved in the research enterprise.

With its solid grounding in transpersonal studies and extensive coverage of qualitative approaches without ignoring quantitative approaches, Transpersonal Research Methods for the Social Sciences will be an invaluable addition to the libraries of researchers across many disciplines, as well as a supplement in research methods courses.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 287-306) and index.

CHOICE Review

According to the editors of this collection, the full value of transpersonal psychology has not been realized because of reliance on the standard methodologies of traditional social science. The contributors, all affiliated with the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, are engaged in the study of extraordinary human experiences (EHEs): mystical, psychic, death-related, encounter (e.g., angels, aliens), and exceptional normal experiences (runner's high, goose bumps). The new subject matter demands new methods, and five new approaches to studying EHEs are introduced in this volume. The transpersonal methodologies presented include integral inquiry, intuitive inquiry, organic research, transpersonal-phenomenological inquiry, and inquiry informed by exceptional human experiences. All share the perspective that researcher and subject are not seen as separate and experiences are "honored." These approaches draw on the researcher's intuition, subjective experience, and relationship with subjects (coresearchers). Findings are presented using alternative modalities (e.g., art, dance). The clearest exposition of transpersonal research methods is found in part 3, short statements on dissertation projects sponsored by the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. Although the critique of the narrowness of traditional methodologies is valuable, the volume does not effectively deal with the validity and reliability issues raised by some of the practices advocated (e.g., shamanic journeying on the part of the researcher).
