CHOICE Review

Giroux and Aronowitz have written a very important book, whose strength lies in its ambition, optimism, and incurable sanity. After almost ten years of radical educational analysis and critique, the publication of this book clearly proves that this very important intellectual movement is maturing. One of the main strengths of this book is what the authors call turning the language of critique into the language of possibility. Critical theory as it has informed educational analysis has, up to this point, left radical educators, really the entire educational reform movement, with a sense of frustration and lack of agency. This book synthesizes and operationalizes some of the best insights and thinking of radical educational analyses. Additionally, the text offers some of the clearest analyses of neoconservative educational rhetoric and reform to date. The growing partnership between the corporate sector and schooling makes this a very timely and cogent work. The text is well documented, argued, and written. The ideas it contains are honest, forthright, and brave. This text would surely round out any collection on educational reform or the current debate about the state of American public schooling. Recommended, without reservation, for academic library acquisition.-M.J. Carbone, Muhlenberg College
