Library Journal Review
Drawing on his experiences as a consultant and teacher of seminars about the implementation of ISO (International Organization for Standardization, based in Geneva, Switzerland) 9000 standards and certification, Arnold provides a straightforward guidebook for U.S. managers. His step-by-step manual serves as a road map through the potential pitfalls, U-turns, road hazards, and dead ends that many U.S. companies have experienced in implementing ISO 9000. Like Perry Johnson's ISO 9000 (LJ 8/93), this functional reference describes what ISO 9000 is, where it came from, what it means, and how to implement it. It also details the 20 elements of ISO 9000 and discusses how they can be altered to fit into specific companies' situations. Appendixes illustrate forms, processes, formats, and records that companies can use to develop their paperwork and procedures. For specialized business collections; operations and quality managers in particular should find this practical resource worthwhile.-Joseph W. Leonard, Miami Univ., Oxford, Ohio (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review
Arnold (certified quality auditor and certified quality engineer) examines the requirements for certification by the International Organization for Standardization to its standard 9000, a guideline for the design, manufacture, sale, and servicing of a product. The author employs a question-and-answer style throughout the 24 chapters to present a comprehensive documentation of the ISO standard and the concomitant five-phase certification process. The eight appendixes provide examples of the forms, records, statements of policy, gauge calibration standards, corrective action requests, internal audit checklists, and flow charts. Though the work emphasizes the ISO standards, the discussion serves as an excellent reference item for every business attempting to improve its quality control systems. This book should be part of any business reference collection. S. R. Kahn; University of Cincinnati
