Booklist Review

Gr. 2-4. Applegate chronicles the gradual acceptance of African Americans in the military by telling the stories of Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., the first black man in this century to be admitted to West Point, and Colin L. Powell, presently serving as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The reading level indicates the book is aimed at children ages 7 to 10, but the interest level for this type of material usually does not begin until about 10. These are one-dimensional portraits; the facts are given, but the humanity never comes through. Also, time lines do not give some important pieces of information, such as the dates these men served in various campaigns and when and why they were appointed generals. These omissions, plus the lack of an index, make the book a poor choice for students doing research, but libraries needing additional material on living black men of achievement may find it useful. --Sheilamae O'Hara
