CHOICE Review

Addressing the issues of values education, the author provides teachers' reports of a sixth and a third grade classroom investigating AIDS and homelessness. Andrews contends that inquiry learning as was done in these classrooms is an effective mechanism through which the school can teach values without becoming doctrinaire or relativistic. Drawing on current research about the development of morality in children, Andrews presents a convincing case for teaching core values in schools. Her argument is strengthened by her historical analysis of the values expressed in children's text books. She notes a shift over the past 200 years from an emphasis on the religious toward a multicultural focus on respect for differences. The argument she makes about the evolution of values in the context of a changing America is persuasive. Her suggestions for instructional strategies center on children's decision making and problem solving, and seem workable. Includes a reference list, a bibliography of children's literature for a values centered classroom, and an annotated bibliography. The book is valuable even if unconventional in its format, with advertisements at the end for books on related topics. Undergraduate; researcher; professional. S. Sugarman Bennington College
