School Library Journal Review

In Part 1, each chapter offers a number of ideas and gives multiple ways to use riddles. The author suggests creating appealing and interactive bulletin boards that promote reading with riddles and book jackets; humorous ways to practice reading for a purpose-like using riddles in daily school announcements to practice public speaking; using them on publicity handouts to promote the library; and presenting puppet skits with them. All of these ideas will appeal to children, and they don't take great artistic talent or funds to implement. Part 2 includes hundreds of riddles organized by subject. The collection excludes topics such as underwear, bodily functions, disrespectful attitudes, and contemporary fads that will quickly fade. This is a fun, interesting resource that will be used again and again. "What happened when Humpty Dumpty read a riddle book? Booklist Review

An experienced public and school librarian provides innovative ways to make reading fun by using riddles, noting that riddles not only entertain but also exercise the brain. The first part of the book suggests ways to share riddles with children and guides the creation of riddles and a riddle file. The second part includes hundreds of riddles, organized by subject and subsubject. Three appendixes provide skits, recommended books, reproducibles, and samples. An extensive index enables quick location of remembered riddles. Although riddles appear to be for younger grades, older students will groan while secretly enjoying humorous excerpts from the seemingly stoic library environment, creating a welcoming and inviting arena to enter again and again. A useful addition to any professional collection.--Marcus, Sara Copyright 2009 Booklist
