Booklist Review

Gr. 7-10. These new books in the World Leaders series look at two heroes of Judaism. As the author states, ``Nothing is recorded about Judah Maccabee's early life except that he was one of the five sons of Mattathias . . . and that they all lived in the village of Modin.'' Fortier manages to overcome this problem by filling his book with other illuminating material: descriptions of Hellenism and the Seleucids, whom Judah and his rag-tag army overcame, a history of the Jews and Judaism, and a look at the revolt itself and its impact on future generations. It is the supplementary material, the book's many historical paintings, engravings, maps and Books for Young Adultsphoto Children's Booksgraphs, that puts this account a cut above other books about the man. In Weizmann, a more recent Jewish leader, Chaim Weizmann, one of the founders of Zionism, is discussed. During his 20 years as president of the World Zionism Organization, Weizmann raised money for his cause and helped settle numerous refugees in what was to become the state of Israel. In 1948 when the country achieved independence, he was its first president. A thoughtful, profusely illustrated biography. IC.
