CHOICE Review

Ali (Indiana Univ. of Pennsylvania) takes an ambitious approach in this book on globalization. He accurately identifies globalization as a topic that has not been treated inclusively in a single book; he seeks to fill this void by providing "the most comprehensive coverage of the subject to date." The book addresses globalization from definition and practice to effect, areas that others have found difficult to handle individually. Further, Ali strives to integrate perspectives on globalization from both academics and practitioners of international business and colors his descriptions of a wide range of topics with illustrations from firms and their leaders. However, the book does not achieve the sought-after goal. It covers too many aspects of globalization from too many perspectives, adequately addressing none of them. The book is broad but not inclusive, anecdotal but not thorough. Further, the author's attempt to cover globalization from both academic and practitioner perspectives fails, as the treatment of international business is elementary from an academic point of view, and its applications for practitioners remain opaque. In sum, the book is aggressive in its goals, but the search goes on for a seminal work on globalization. Most suitable for comprehensive international business collections. T.
