The populations of many species of animals and plants are age-structured, i.e. the individuals present at any one time were born over a range of different times, and their fertility and survival depend on age. The properties of such populations are important for interpreting experiments and observations on the genetics of populations for animal and plant breeding, and for understanding the evolution of features of life-histories such as senescence and time of reproduction. In this new edition Brian Charlesworth provides a comprehensive review of the basic mathematical theory of the demography and genetics of age-structured populations. The mathematical level of the book is such that it will be accessible to anyone with a knowledge of basic calculus and linear algebra.

Includes bibliographical references (p. [273]-291) and indexes.

CHOICE Review

Most of the world's organisms live in age-structured populations, i.e., individuals are born over a range of time rather than all at once, and age importantly affects probability of survival and production of offspring. This second edition updates the 1980 classic (1st ed., CH, May '81) on the theory of population age structure in sexually reproducing organisms, its relation to variation in population size and genetic composition, and how natural selection affects these attributes over time. The book, whose text is the same length as its predecessor, is mainly altered by trimming and citation of more recent studies. The basic mathematical models of age-structured populations have not changed; they require knowledge of calculus, matrix algebra, and population genetics. The longest chapter in the first edition, on evolution of life history traits, is the most modified and expanded here, as this area of research has advanced most. New sections cover effects of reproductive fitness of close relatives on life history traits, sex ratio, sex differences in reproductive timing, and hermaphroditism and sex change. The writing is clear but not easy. Charlesworth's book will stimulate future study. Upper-division undergraduate through professional. A. J. Kohn; University of Washington
