CHOICE Review

Olson has written a small, elegant introduction to the world of biotechnology, based on a 1985 symposium that commemorated the tenth anniversary of the Asilomar conference. The symposium was sponsored by the Academy Industry Program, a joint project of the National Academies of Science and Engineering and the Institute of Medicine. Science writer Olson has done a commendable job of synthesizing the current thinking on biotechnology's successes and future as expressed by the presenters at the conference. Chapters cover the necessary range of topics and provide adequate references for follow-up. However, the Academy would have done well to publish the full proceedings in a companion volume. Recommended for any level science collection.-N.J. Bird, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
