CHOICE Review

Looking at critical psychological aspects of aging (mostly among healthy populations), Qualls (Univ. of Colorado, Colorado Springs) and Abeles (Michigan State Univ.) explore how memory, health, thinking, and relationships change with age. Though the US is a youth-oriented culture, many Americans live 76 years and more; they enjoy decades after retirement, but they also worry about aging. Older adults are often slow thinkers, but data from neuropsychology, cognition, and memory highlight ways that knowledge may compensate for age-related cognitive declines. Although most chapters provide ponderous reviews of conflicting research, Leah Light's review of memory and John Norcross and Bob Knight's discussion of psychotherapy are easy to read, thought provoking and enjoyable. Other contributors consider social relationship, health psychology, depression, and psychotherapy. Robert Levenson concludes that healthy adults' emotions improve with age. In their essay, Richard Ryan and Jennifer LaGuardia explain how adults preserve well-being and basic needs despite inevitable social loss. Both Thomas Joiner and Margaret Gatz explore whether depression is a looming epidemic or a rare, overestimated, and undertreated disorder among older adults. A useful volume for all libraries serving professionals and the general public and for academic collections supporting the study of psychology and coursework intersecting with issues of aging. S. M. Valente; University of Southern California
