Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This edition outlines the study of texts' composition, revision, physical embodiments, process of transmission, and manner of reception. It discusses why these matters are central to a historical understanding of literature and shows how the insights, methods, and products of bibliographical and textual studies can be applied to other branches of scholarship. The volume also surveys established practices in the field and indicates areas of current debate and development. It concludes with an appendix on the generally accepted style for textual notation, a reference bibliography, a handy glossary, and an index.

Includes references and index.

CHOICE Review

The third edition of this handy manual follows the structure of the second (CH, Nov'89), but is more than 60 pages longer. An introductory chapter is followed by succinct accounts of analytical and descriptive bibliography, including an explanation of signature collation and two samples of bibliographic description. The chapter "A Text and Its Embodiments," which explains the often circuitous progress from manuscript to printed book to later editions in both the handpress and machine-press periods, is succeeded by chapters on textual criticism and textual editing, the latter illustrated by four substantial examples. Additions and revision, evident throughout, provide fuller explanations and take account of recent developments in bibliographical and textual scholarship. An example of the latter is the discussion of the "materiality of texts" and how it influences the ways texts are read. Besides an index and a greatly expanded and updated 11-page "Reference Bibliography," this edition adds a very useful 25-page "Glossary of Bibliographical and Textual Terms," enhanced by appropriate illustrations of printing equipment, and a six-page works cited list. Extremely well done, and a "muse" for all academic libraries supporting literary and bibliographic research. J. H. Kaimowitz; Trinity College (CT)
