The Politics and Morality of Deviance develops a theoretical framework and then applies it to four different and specific case studies in an explicit attempt to put the sociology of deviance back into mainstream sociology. It argues that deviance should be analyzed as a relative phenomenon in different and changing cultures, vis-a-vis change and stability in the boundaries of different symbolic/moral universes. It also argues that the legitimization of power should be thought of in terms of a moral order that in turn defines the societal boundaries of different symbolic/moral universes.

Mills' concept of motivational accounting systems is utilized throughout the text in order to illustrate how the micro and macro levels of analysis can be integrated.

CHOICE Review

Ben Yehuda again attempts to place the concept of deviance within mainstream sociological analysis. In his Deviance and Moral Boundaries (CH, May'86), the author stressed the role of morality for determining deviance. This new book differs in that equal emphasis is placed on morality and power. Ben Yehuda shows how historical and dynamic forces affect the perception and definition of deviant behavior. He argues that deviance must be perceived in terms of how symbolic-moral universes interpret deviant behavior. He emphasizes motivational accounting systems (motives for justification) as a means of understanding deviance. Deviance and the reaction to it, according to Ben Yehuda, can be used as a heuristic device for understanding change and stability. Ben Yehuda offers a very good review of the major theories of deviance and a tightly woven method for understanding deviant behavior. However, he fails to provide sufficient examples for many of his assertions, making the book highly introspective and theoretical. For this reason, it is recommended primarily for qualitative researchers and scholars. P. J. Venturelli Valparaiso University
