"Insignia de honor/Badge of honor, Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico/Museo de San Juan, Municipio de San Juan; Escena del crimen (el crimen de quién?)/Scene of the crime (whose crime?), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico; En la barbería no se llora/No crying allowed in the barbershop, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico." Catalog of an exhibition held Sept. 1, 2000-Jan. 15, 2001, in different locations in San Juan, P.R.Resumen: "Pepón Osorio: Door to Door, curated by Silvia Karman Cubiñá in 2000, presented four major Osorio installations simultaneously in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This was achieved through a collaboration between four cultural institutions: the Escuela de Artes Plásticas / San Juan Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Museum of Art. In this publication, produced as part of this project, art historian Susana Torruella Leval explores the continuum of Caribbean and Latin American artists living in New York and their novel, unconventional expressions that take to the streets. Puerto Rico-based art historian Marimar Benítez discusses how Osorio's work alters the attitudes and function of art museums and dislocates paradigms. Dan Cameron analyzes Osorio's large-scale installations as mediators between the personal and the collective. Paris-based curator and critic Hans-Ulrich Obrist discusses with the artist aspects of his methodology, the process of conceptualization and his involvement with the community. Jennifer González, Maribel Álvarez and Coco Fusco explore specific installations and their power to illuminate diverse aspects of the human experience, while Lilliana Ramos Collado and Manuel Álvarez Lezama engage in a dialogue on contemporary issues, based on the myriad references in the work of the artist. The contributions of Silvia Karman Cubiñá, Teremar Pumarada and Haydee Venegas round out a publication that offers the first comprehensive look at Osorio's artistic production beginning with his explorations as a performance artist to his signature style installations, always bearing witness to the transformative power of the imagination".

Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Puerto Rican artist Pepon Osorio is that one of that rare species of artist, a "public intellectual" whose creative process directly involves the marginalized communities in the cities where he has worked The original venues for many of his installations were not galleries or museums but abandoned storefronts and department stores. From there they were then exported to museums, inverting and subverting general art world practices Osorio's work straddles the realms of high art and popular culture, celebrating the resilience and the ghetto environment that is his source of inspiration The exhibit Pepon Osorio: From Door to Door -- which this impressive catalogue accompanies -- addresses several audiences at the same time Two of the works are housed in museums, while the third, Badge of Honor, is installed in an abandoned storefront in Santurce, an impoverished sector San Juan Residents of Santurce, clients of several municipal family and welfare programs, and museum visitors will all be shuttledbetween the three sites. The mingling of these diverse audiences in the museums and in the inner city tackles, in an unprecedented manner, questions of class and access to contemporary art.
