Booklist Review

The National Museum of Women in the Arts "addresses the gender imbalance in the presentation of art by bringing to light important women artists of the past while promoting great women artists working today." The purpose of this groundbreaking survey is similar; "It reveals the stories of over three hundred women born in sixty different countries, working across five centuries, who have made paintings of every imaginable subject and vision." Each of the alphabetically arranged entries consists of a brief biographical sketch, highlights of artistic accomplishments, and a full-color reproduction of one of the entrant's key works. This arrangement allows the reader to explore a diverse array of painters and discover common themes in both their art and lives. These interwoven stories are a welcome and needed addition to the literature of art history. The range of coverage is impressive, reaching from Artemisia Gentileschi, Mary Cassatt, and Suzanne Valadon to Helen Frankenthaler, Faith Ringgold, Amy Sherald, and many others. This volume is a catalyst and inspiration for further study that belongs in every art history collection.
