Resumen: Encyclopedia of Caribbean Archaeology offers a comprehensive overview of the available archaeological research conducted in the region. Beginning with the earliest native migrations and moving through contemporary issues of heritage management, the contributors tackle the usual questions of colonization, adaptation, and evolution while embracing newer research techniques, such as geoinformatics, archaeometry, paleodemography, DNA analysis, and seafaring simulations. Entries are cross-referenced so that readers can efficiently access data on a variety of related topics. The introduction includes a survey of the various archaeological periods in the Caribbean, as well as a discussion of the region's geography, climate, topography, and oceanography. It also offers an easy-to-read review of the historical archaeology, providing a better understanding of the cultural contexts of the Caribbean that resulted from the convergence of European, Native American, African, and then Asian settlers.

CHOICE Review

The Caribbean's prehistoric/early historic cultures are now generally regarded as more diverse and less understood than previously thought, despite differences in interpretation of archaeological, ethnographic, historic, genetic, and other evidence. This new reference work fits well with other recent scholarly publications offering overviews of the region's archaeology. These include The Oxford Handbook of Caribbean Archaeology, edited by W. Keegan, C. Hofman, and R. Rodríguez Ramos (2013), and S. Wilson's The Archaeology of the Caribbean (2007). All three works have distinctive functions and significant overlap. The Handbook, an anthropological review of Caribbean archaeological studies, delves deeply into how the theory and methods of relevant disciplines have informed new understandings. Wilson's somewhat more dated volume reflects less of the recognized complexity and open questions of Caribbean archaeology while serving well as an accessible introductory textbook. Edited by Reid (Myths and Realities of Caribbean History (CH, Mar'10, 47-3985) and Gilmore, this new encyclopedia covers prehistoric/historic era cultures of the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean (Bahamas) that have been studied archaeologically, specific sites, most countries or territories in the region, cultural groups, famous archaeologists of the past, selected artifact classes, and archaeological techniques/concepts. Short, alphabetically ordered articles are followed by bibliographical references and see also references. Some of Reid's material from Myths is reprised in appropriate chapters. Unfortunately, some wording from Myths (p. 49-50) that reappears in the Encyclopedia (p. 41-42) may lead to some confusion concerning the geographic locations of Taíno culture (though later text offers clarification). Selected archaeological research institutions, museums, and historic preservation organizations of the Caribbean are included. Institutions that can afford all three works will benefit. Also available electronically, this encyclopedia is valuable for academic/research libraries and natural/cultural history institutes and museums focusing on Caribbean/Latin American studies, archaeology, or anthropology. Glossary, but (unfortunately) no index. --Kathryn Cleland-Sipfle, Southern Oregon University
