Nota de disertación: Thesis (Master in Science- Chemistry) -- Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico, 2021. Resumen: Quantum dots (QDs) are nanoparticles of semiconductor materials with a diameter of 1-10 nm and have applications in photovoltaic devices (PV). QDs are considered a promising third-generation photovoltaic device sensitizer because of tuneable band gap energy controlling by particle size, and high light absorption. Quantum dots Dye-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) are an emerging solar cell technology that use low cost, ecofriendly materials, and have been reported with an efficiency energy conversion of 44%. For the synthesis of QDs, capping agents perform an important function on shape, optical, and electronic properties on QDs formation and also avoids agglomeration. Tin selenide (SnSe) QDs have excellent optoelectronics properties which allows them to absorb all visible light. SnSe QDs have been study to a lesser extent and have been used primarily as counter electrode in QDSSCs. Thioglycolic acid (TGA) is used as capping agent in the synthesis of SnSe QDs which forms a complex between his carboxylic acid and thiol compounds. Glycerol is considered a green capping agent because of its non-toxicity and less expensive material, which can also form complex between its three alcohol groups. The aim of this study is to evaluate TGA, Glycerol, and Glycerol/TGA 1:1 mixture as capping agent in the synthesis of SnSe QDs to be used in QDSSCs. Since the annealing temperature of the n-type TiO2 semiconductor (QDSSCs photoanode) contributes to surface morphology and electronic properties, the temperatures of 350, 400 and 450°C were evaluated.
