Many students come to architecture relatively late in their education, so it is in college where they come into contact with those who will influence their entire careers. Many top schools are run by leading global practitioners, who, some might argue, have more lasting influence as educators than as architects.
The wide range of pedagogical philosophies and practical lessons, set out here in specially commissioned essays, creates a fascinating picture of how our ideas and practices of architecture are formed, nurtured and ultimately built for the world to see.
Through both the professional and educational experience of the contributors, we discover many unexpected and unorthodox methods for teaching those who will build our world.
The book includes:
* Thirty-eight texts by the most influential architects and educators from the world's top schools
* Intimate and practical insights into how and what young architects need to know and learn to build a better world
* A look into the future of our built world through the perspectives, priorities and principles of those teaching the next generation of architects
* Over 300 illustrations and contributions by some of the top names in architectural practice and education, the book is full of design ideas
Includes index.
Includes bibliographical references.

CHOICE Review
Is the purpose of higher education career preparation or independent thinking? In Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters (CH, Feb'15, 52-3365), Michael Roth notes that higher education is the great equalizer-that it needs to address the whole person rather than train people exclusively in specific skills that may become obsolete. Similarly, should professional design curricula be limited to job readiness, or does an elastic, personalized, iterative approach produce architects poised to make lasting contributions to society? This volume features 41 essays by a nominally global set of architectural educators from the US and Europe. These include, e.g., a final one from Australia and an essay (this one shamelessly self-promotional) titled "Implications of Architectural Education" from China. In each, the message aligns with Roth's mandate that the abiding goal should be to help students develop and apply their imaginations. Each chapter begins with a boldfaced abstract and includes illustrations of unrelated student work and a few uninspired student cartoons. Five chapters, interspersed in a seemingly random pattern throughout the text, promote buildings recently designed for architecture schools. End-of-volume apparatus includes author biographies and contact information. Architecture school deans will constitute the narrow audience for this compilation. Summing Up: Recommended. Professionals/practitioners. --Paul Glassman, Felician CollegeNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
