Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The standard text on colonial Latin America, this book, now in its fourth edition, provides a concise study of the Iberian colonies in the New World. The narrative spans from pre-conquest civilizations to European exploration, conquest, and colonization of the region, and examines the subsequent loss of power over the colonies by their distant imperial governments. This fourth edition has been revised to include the latest scholarship, with particular emphasis on social and cultural history.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

Burkholder and Johnson have written a fine general history of Spanish and Portuguese America extending through the independence period. The authors are recognized scholars who have used recent findings on demography, racial groups, and lifestyles. Unfortunately they lack the gift for distilling information that Charles Gibson displayed in his classic Spain in America (CH, May'67). Although their account of the Spanish colonies is better than the sociological version in James Lockhart and Stuart B. Schwartz's Early Latin America: A History of Colonial Spanish America and Brazil (CH, May'84), Brazil fares worse. The study is intended as a text but undergraduate students will have difficulty in differentiating between the colonial regimes. Other minor flaws occur in the discussion of the Spanish struggle for justice, the organization of material, and the cursory sketch of the Spanish borderlands that fails to mention California. Good supplementary reading lists appear at the end of each chapter. Highly recommended for graduate students and faculty; useful for others, including public library patrons. D. M.
