Transforming China provides an insider's comprehensive and perceptive examination of China's economic reform and its political implications. With wide-ranging primary materials, including interviews, surveys and author's own recollections of Deng Xiaoping and Zhao Ziyang, the book sheds new light on the Chinese approach to reform, including its dual-goal, dynamic gradualism and reform leadership. It assesses the vast social and political changes set forth by the reform, especially multiplying socio-political problems, and the international ramifications of China's rise.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 202-211) and index.

CHOICE Review

Long-standing debates regarding political and economic transitions from totalitarian, central planned systems have been argued in recent decades. The "Big Bang" approach has provided the framework for change in Russia and Eastern Europe. China, on the other hand, has continued the course set in 1979 of pragmatic, incremental transition. Many believe that regardless of the path, economic liberalization and the growth of markets must eventually lead to political liberalization and democratization. Has this been the case in China as it begins a third decade of dynamic gradualism in economic reform? Zhang finds that Chinese economic reforms have affected the economy broadly, and that the nature of reforms has had tremendous political implications. Yet, Zhang believes promarket economic reforms have had a mixed impact on political liberalization. Although they have transformed the relationship between state and society, the primary focus of reform on economic development "has sharply narrowed the scope of China's political reform and hindered progress towards full-scale democratization." This valuable study of the complex changes occurring in China should be on the reading list of anyone concerned with the relationship between economic and political transformation. Public and academic library collections, lower-division undergraduate through faculty. C. A. Haulman; College of William and Mary
