Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

An analysis and evaluation of the processes of communication among deaf children. Emphasizes actual observation in schools rather than relying solely on tests and experiments. Offers a number of criticisms of educational methods and teaching techniques, arguing that many of the deaf child's problems are not a 'natural' product of the disability but are created by ineffective educational methods.

Includes indexes.

CHOICE Review

Everyone concerned with deaf children should be aware of this book. The authors' conclusions about language and communication skills of school-age deaf children as well as the factors affecting those skills are sure to prompt much discussion. The central thesis, based upon nine years of research, is the importance of contingent interactions of adult and child for facilitation of independence and learning at all stages of development. Educational implications are presented, and current educational practice is frequently found wanting. Readers may react strongly to this short, well-written, and well-documented book. While avoiding the controversy surrounding methods of deaf education, this book is certain to stimulate controversy of its own. Highly recommended for advanced undergraduates and professionals in deaf education, audiology, speech-language pathology, and educational psychology. Appropriate for general readers and parents of deaf children.-D.V. Allen, Wayne State University
