CHOICE Review

With the continuing increase in the proportion of the population who are elderly, specialized techniques of assisting them with their mental health problems assume greater importance. Edited and authored by an impressive array of experts in the field, this anthology provides an excellent overview of group approaches to working with older people. The groups considered include those who are (a) active, reasonably healthy, and mentally alert; (b) suffer chronic physical and/or mental handicaps; (c) live in the community; and (d) reside in an institution. Many useful theoretical and practical insights are suggested. The first chapter presents a brief review of the literature; 14 chapters discuss issues relating to insight, supportive, and rehabilitative group therapy; 3 chapters consider the importance of the arts in group therapy; and a final chapter addresses the problems of training for group work with older adults. As would be expected, there are many different writing styles, but the chapters will capture reader interest, hold attention, and provoke the rethinking of old ideas. A good table of contents, name and subject indexes, and chapter references add to the value of the book. Should be read by the interested beginner as well as the seasoned professional. -L. M. Cooper, University of Utah
