CHOICE Review

Books about preservation issues generally fall into four categories: philosophy, stylistic histories, procedural, and technical. The work under review, falling into the last category, attempts a Herculean task. Unlike the typical technical materials books like Masonry: How to Care for Old and Historic Brick and Stone by Mark London (1988), Weaver's book covers multiple materials like wood, stone, ceramics, metalwork, glass, paints and coatings, among others, and building systems like foundations and roofing. Although Weaver is up to the task, he gives only a brief overview of each subject. What makes this book worthwhile is an excellent bibliography/reference/sources section at the end of each chapter and a few case studies from Columbia University's Center for Preservation Research, of which Weaver is the director. The book could also be more consistent in its chapter organization and illustrations using more projects outside Canada to address a wider climatic range. Still, few books attempt this broad a range of subject matter, and the book should be considered an excellent starting point for preservation technical references.
