School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-9 Watts' clearly written book enriches readers ' knowledge of the Smithsonian Institution, emphasizing that it is more than museum buildings and a zoo. He discusses the history of the institution and the establishment of the different programs offered, including scientific research and the involvement with art . Watts also touches on the newest developments and future of the Institution. This is an interesting addition to the series and a subject about which little has been published for children. Layout is open and uncluttered; black-and-white photographs or reproductions appear on almost every page. Therese Bigelow, Hampton Public Library, Va. (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 4-7. In these two straightforward overviews the authors discuss the history, purpose, and scope of two well-known government agencies. After describing the early history of postal services in the U.S., McAfee looks at the structure of today's operation, explains the moving of the mail and other available services, and concludes with a look at the future. A short glossary is included as well as a list of selected references all adult titles. Young children wanting information about processing the mail will find better help in Gail Gibbons' The Post Office Book (Booklist 79:1467 Ag 83) or Jean Johnson's Postal Workers A to Z (83:1013 Mr 1 87), and older readers will find Harold Roth's First Class (79:1467 Ag 83) more inviting; however, this does provide good historical information that none of the other titles include. The Smithsonian will have even less outright appeal; the book traces the founding and organization of the museum with its many diverse arms and talks about the contributions of each of its directors. Material on the work of its 12 centers, including the National Air and Space Museum, Freer Gallery of Art, Hirshorn Museum, Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, National Zoological Park, and National Museum of Natural History, will provide succinct references for researchers as well as for visitors prepping for a trip to the capital. Both titles are scattered with black-and-white photos. BE.
