From exotic spa treatments to euthanasia, this book examines the background and social context of medical tourism--the practice of traveling for health care. This work also documents how this industry is reshaping the face of medicine worldwide for individuals, local communities, and national health care systems. Medical Tourism: A Reference Handbook provides an accessible overview of the state of medical tourism, written from a balanced, unbiased perspective. The authors provide relevant social context for this controversial topic, discussing the state of extremely limited research data on medical tourism; the ethical issues involved, such as traveling to have a black-market organ transplanted; and the significant impact of medical tourism on health care systems--that of the United States, and those of the destination countries. The book highlights many contemporary problems, controversies, and implications of medical tourism both for individuals and health care systems, and presents thought-provoking potential solutions. The topic of medical tourism is also addressed against the backdrop of current healthcare reforms in the United States. Readers can reference a wealth of additional material on medical tourism, ranging from original documents to extensive directories of selected organizations and resources.

Library Journal Review

Stolley (Basics of Sociology) and Watson (Understanding Obesity) add to a recent flood of titles about traveling abroad for lower cost or life-saving medical procedures. Eight chapters define the subject and its controversy, explore its economic and social impact, profile relevant organizations, and offer data along with reprinted articles. Chapters close with a four- to nine-page bibliography. A "Resources" segment finishes the title, detailing books, legislation, individual stories, and even currency calculators. verdict While some of this information may seem self-evident to informed readers, the title's health care provider profiles and resource listings are extraordinarily worthwhile.-Savannah Schroll-Guz, formerly with Smithsonian Inst. CHOICE Review

Billed as a "reference handbook," this volume in the "Contemporary World Issues" series provides straightforward definitions and heavily cited introductions to a comprehensive range of issues surrounding medical tourism (defined as the "... idea of traveling for the purposes of obtaining health care or wellness services."). Although the book is subject to the same limitations that any published reference source pertaining to a rapidly evolving topic would be, Stolley (sociology, Virginia Wesleyan College) and Watson (freelance writer/editor) include extensive listings of providers and policy-setting organizations; online resources including those most appropriate to researchers, patients, or other interested parties; and position statements. There is also a time line on the development of medical tourism and a wide-ranging data/supporting documents section. In that sense, it can function as both a resource handbook and a reference book guiding readers to other sources of information. The introductory sections, spanning about the first half of the volume, are clearly written and can be read straight through. The remainder is mostly reference materials and concludes with resources for patients followed by a limited glossary of terms. Overall, a very good starting point for conducting research on, or simply acquiring a basic understanding of, medical tourism. Summing Up: Recommended. All collections. R. A. Booklist Review

Medical tourism defined as traveling for the purposes of obtaining health care or wellness services has become tremendously popular, and this work will be valuable in public libraries. What's surprising is this title's inclusion in ABC-CLIO's Contemporary World Issues series. Although not the crisis that some of those titles explore (genocide, global organized crime), this is equally authoritative and objective and explores a social and economic trend worldwide. As with others in the series, the work begins with an overview and includes a chronology, many documents, a directory of organizations, and annotated resources. The background chapter looks at the reasons people travel abroad, most popular types of medical tourism, and top destinations. This is followed by problems and controversies (safety, ethical, and economic issues) and a time line (Romans traveled to Alexandria; medical mud was used to treat the wounded in WWII; Swiss voters allowed suicide tourism to continue). An Organizational Biographies of selected medical-care providers throughout the world is arranged by continent and then country, with contact information, website, accreditation, and specialty. Data and Documents includes statistics (many already cited in the text) in bullets and charts, even specific comparative costs (U.S. hip replacement is more than $43,000, versus $9,000 in India or $12,000 in Singapore). Documents include statements by the American College of Surgeons and the UN World Tourism Organization, plus an excerpt from the CDC's Yellow Book. A 20-page directory describes organizations (from Accreditation Canada to the World Bank) related to the topic. This is followed by an annotated bibliography of books, websites, journals, industry periodicals, patient guides, and travel information. A brief glossary and index complete the work. This volume is current through 2011 (lots of 2007 data, but the Arab Spring is mentioned among places in the world that face political instability). There are several similar titles cited as sources, but Patients beyond Borders (2008) is more a practical guide for individuals, with detailed information organized by country. Stolley and Watson have produced a reference work that will be used by patrons to begin and then facilitate their own searches for medical information. Recommended for most medium-sized to large public libraries.--Gooden, Susan Copyright 2010 Booklist
