CHOICE Review

A new work focused on the interaction of the technologies and structures that constitute the design and implementation of digital computing systems. It is the authors' intent that students might grasp the whole of these systems and appreciate possible trade-offs between the underlying technological elements rather than specializing on, for example, logic elements or operating systems. This comprehensive book briefly covers all of the key topics of digital system design from binary numbers and logic families to computer architectures from a hardware perspective, and from instruction sets to operating systems concepts related to process synchronization, interrupts, and real time control. Many examples and problems are provided and the design of a simple microarchitecture computer is used as an example to bridge many of the book's sections. Several appendixes, an excellent bibliography, and detailed index are included. A unique and interesting addition to works serving this field. Accessible to undergraduate students. -E. M. Aupperle, University of Michigan
