CHOICE Review

In this graphically rich, conceptually provocative, intermediate-level design primer, the authors--both landscape architects and urban designers currently teaching and practicing in London--explore the importance of landscape architecture to the realization of successful urban environments and promote the notion that successful landscape design is equally dependent upon a fundamental understanding of urban design history and core principles. Wall (Kingston Univ.) and Waterman (Writtle School of Design) build their argument by juxtaposing the words and ideas of key urban theorists, historians, critics, and designers with photographs, plans, and diagrams depicting projects (both real and imagined) that cover the spectrum of urban design from vernacular to iconic to bleeding-edge contemporary. This effective strategy immerses aspiring designers and interpreters of cities in the signature handiwork of some of the most creative and influential firms shaping urban landscapes across the globe. The text portions of the book provide both context and intellectual counterpoint to all this graphic stimulation in the form of smartly nuanced distillations of basic urban design concepts. Instructors will appreciate the authors' liberal use of case studies to challenge students to examine and articulate their own understanding of what constitutes ethical, socially aware, and responsible design practice. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through graduate students; two-year technical program students; general readers. K. S. Edwards Clemson University
