School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up-- Goldman, a lesser-known political activist, is brought to life in this new addition to the series. The Russian-born woman immigrated to the U. S. to flee personal and political domination. Soon after her arrival, the Haymarket Square riot of 1886 sparked in her the need to fight for people's rights and thus began her lifelong career as leader to the oppressed. Waldstreicher treats Goldman fairly without romanticizing her fight. The book is clear and concise with wide margins, captioned black-and-white photos on almost every page, an extensive index, and a chronology of Goldman's life. --Anne Marie Lilly, Reeths-Puffer Junior High School, Muskegon, MI (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

In the illustrated American Women of Achievement series, this biography of political activist Goldman relates her personal life to the radical ferment of her time and gives a sense of political protest in early twentieth-century America, Europe, and Russia. Waldstreicher shows that Goldman's anarchism integrated her deeply felt ideals about the individual and society, and that her attacks on capitalism, religion, marriage, patriotism, and militarism in the West were as outspoken as her criticism of the Soviet Union. Feminists will be interested to read about her defense of women's rights in relation to work, family, and contraception. No notes; includes bibliography, photographs, chronology, index. Gr. 8-12. --Hazel Rochman
