CHOICE Review

Adalberto Libera (1903-63) was a significant figure in the first generation of modern architects in Italy. His work is featured prominently in survey accounts of 20th-century Italian architecture. He designed important government-sponsored buildings in Rome, the Italian pavilion at the Chicago 1933 Exposition, and noteworthy examples of public housing in Italy after WW II. His 1932 design for the Exhibition of the 10th Anniversary of Fascism is one of the seminal examples of Fascist political design. This monograph is an English translation of a work published originally in Italian (Bologna, 1989). Superior in production quality to the original Italian publication, this English edition includes an excellent introductory essay and brief descriptions with illustrations of Libera's major built and unbuilt work. It also includes a short biography, an extensive bibliography of writings both by and about Libera, and a catalog of his work. An attractive alternative to the primary monograph on Libera's work, Adalberta Libera opera completa, ed. by Giacomo Polin and Giovanni Marzari (Milan, 1989).
