CHOICE Review

International Tourism performs the invaluable service of placing global tourism into an international economic context. This perspective is especially helpful for public policy planners and analysts in dealing with the multifaceted global tourism phenomenon. The data presented by the authors, as illuminated and amplified by the accompanying text, details the sometimes illusive "paradigm shift" that is occurring with varying tempo and intensity in global tourism. The authors identify and discuss many issues not often found in works of tourism analysis. This is especially true in the economic context, as they consider the theoretical economic determinants, impact, and trends and forecasts of international tourism. The integration of economic and market insights is especially innovative and rewarding to the reader. Another delight for the thoughtful reader is the work's excellent design, which presents data in a user-friendly layout that encourages and facilitates perusing and comparison. Since these data are at the very core of this persuasive and valuable volume, it is important to remember that they are largely generated by the Eurocentric global tourism institutional bureaucracy. Although the authors paint a global portrait, it is through this Eurocentric lens. This influences some of the topic choices and the depth of coverage allocated to each subject in this fine, pioneering effort. Upper-division undergraduate through professional. S. A.
