Cultural intelligence is defined as an individual's ability to function effectively in situations characterized by cultural diversity. With contributions from eminent scholars worldwide, the "Handbook of Cultural Intelligence" is a 'state-of-the-science' summary of the body of knowledge about cultural intelligence and its relevance for managing diversity both within and across cultures. Because cultural intelligence capabilities can be enhanced through education and experience, this handbook emphasizes individual capabilities - specific characteristics that allow people to function effectively in culturally diverse settings - rather than the approach used by more traditional books of describing and comparing cultures based on national cultural norms, beliefs, habits, and practices. The Handbook covers conceptional and definitional issues, assessment approaches, and application of cultural intelligence in the domains of international and cross-cultural management as well as management of domestic activity. It is an invaluable resource that will stimulate and guide future research on this important topic and its application across a broad range of disciplines, including management, organizational behavior, industrial and organizational psychology, intercultural communication, and more.

CHOICE Review

Editors Ang (Nanyang Technological Univ., Singapore) and Van Dyne (Michigan State Univ.) define cultural intelligence (CQ) as "the capability to function effectively in culturally diverse settings." Their volume's 24 articles by an international group of scholars range from literature reviews and empirical research to applications of cultural intelligence. Research indicates that learning other languages and experiencing life in diverse settings can increase cultural intelligence. However, contributors discuss the many variables that can moderate working successfully in other cultures, e.g., the degree of differences between languages, types of family systems, international nonwork experiences, personality, socioeconomic level, religion, and cultural values. Also examined is the capability to adapt to others through cognitive, interpersonal, social, and emotional intelligence, which can boost cultural intelligence. Several chapters target the needs of special groups such as short-term business travelers, counseling psychologists, expatriates, missionaries, top executives, multicultural teams, and global managers. One article describes the theory, reliability, and validity behind the cultural intelligence scale, designed to measure CQ levels. The final article provides an overall summary and discusses future research needs. See related, P. Christopher Earley, Soon Ang, and Joo-Seng Tan's CQ: Developing Cultural Intelligence at Work (CH, Sep'06, 44-0406). Summing Up: Recommended.
