CHOICE Review

Todd's informative, illuminating, and provocative volume is an auspicious opener for the new Schirmer series "Studies in Musical Genres and Repertories." Two introductory chapters (Leon Plantinga on the 19th-century instrument as the promulgator of the musical culture of its time, and Robert S. Winter on performance practices suitable for 19th-century music on today's pianos) set the scene for eye opening chapters on Beethoven, Schubert, Weber, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, and Liszt by scholars William Kinderman, Eva Badura-Skoda, Michael C. Tusa, editor Todd, Jeffrey Kallberg, Anthony Newcomb, Walter Frisch, and Dolores Pesce. Although their material is presented in a variety of styles (analytical, historical, sociocultural), the authors maintain a generally high standard of clarity, providing many well-prepared musical examples and supporting illustrations. This new research and critical thinking about familiar composers whets the appetite for more; the reader will be inspired to explore the fine bibliographies appended to each chapter. This book is an important addition to the literature for all musicians, student and professional, and is recommended for general and academic music collections, lower-division undergraduate and up. -S.
