The bibliography of almost five centuries of music and dance in Puerto Rice has fallen into the cracks of both national and international reporting. The Thompsons redress this situation, offering 995 richly annotated entries on reference sources, biography, folk music and dance, the Puerto Rican Danza, La borinquena (the Commonwealth's official anthem), and the earliest mentions of native music and dance in the Antilles at the time of the Conquest. The work's breadth of coverage and depth of annotations will make it useful to musicologists, folklorists, ballet scholars, teachers, and general readers. Subject and author indexes included.

Includes indexes.

CHOICE Review

The first volume in a new series focused on Latin American music, this work expands Annie F. Thompson's An Annotated Bibliography of Writings About Music in Puerto Rico (1975) from 304 to 995 entries. Included are reference aids, histories, biographies, surveys of music and dance, traveler and historical accounts, and materials about concert and church music, theater and ballet, and folk music. One chapter deals specifically with Danza Puertorrique~na, Puerto Rican national dance, a second with "La Borinque~na," the official Puerto Rican anthem. The work is well organized; includes both English and Spanish-language sources (books, articles, theses, and dissertations published through 1986); is fully annotated; and has appropriate indexes. Each chapter has helpful notes that explain its content. This bibliography does not include studies about Puerto Rican music on the US mainland. Articles found in various popular journals already accessible through The Music Index are omitted in favor of valuable island publications, many of which have not been indexed. These relevant theses should be added: Marisol B. Miranda, "Puerto Rican Dance Forms: Toward a Historical and Musical Appreciation" (M.A. thesis, San Jose State University, 1985) and Luis A. Olivieri, "The Music of the Protestant Hymnals Used in Puerto Rico" (M.S.M. thesis, Boston University, 1976). Recommended for all libraries serving students with an interest in this subject.-J. R. Heintze, The American University/Library
