Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

"When people are not affluent, the quality of their health is a precious possession and a powerful measure of their general welfare; it is also the consequence of a many-layered set of medical, social, and economic processes. This study shows how the conditions of everyday life in a city that is out of control, short on resources, and growing rapidly produce poor health for some and good health for others." "One large informal and unauthorized Cairo Settlement is studied to assess and explain the quality of its health by reference to modes of personal behavior, household resources, and relationships to the larger economic, social, medical, and physical systems in which people exist. Medical factors have a precise place in the study, but are placed in context by showing how social conditions mediate and ultimately determine much of the variation in health."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. CHOICE Review

This statistically based sociological study of the lower-middle-class and lower-class community of Manshiet Naser in eastern Cairo in Egypt, a crowded city of ten million inhabitants in 1990, is based on ethnographic research and formal surveys in the mid-1980s. The study of this unauthorized, officially unplanned community of 64,000 inhabitants describes the community; its places of residence, private businesses, and informal economic structures; and its spatial and social organization. Most of the inhabitants come originally from Upper Egypt, and the authors discuss the existence of "provincial culture" in this highly urban context. They offer historical, economic, and social data and analysis as these relate to the topics of infant and child health, which the authors state is an indicator of health at all ages. Focusing on the causes of child death, infection, undernutrition, feeding, and the management of health and illness, the authors offer implicit suggestions for the improvement of local conditions. The volume contains a good survey bibliography and detailed tables, figures, and notes. Researchers; faculty; professionals. L. Beck; Washington University
