Booklist Review

Gr. 7-12. Teenagers at risk don't exist in a vacuum. Their home environment often plays a part in their predicament and, in fact, may be its real cause. In a book less about fact than about emotion, the Taylors explore the family as a stress factor in teenage life and explain how young adults can overcome some of the obstacles it imposes on them. At the heart of the book is personal testimony: five teenagers speak frankly about families in which drug and alcohol abuse, emotional neglect, and physical/sexual abuse have put them at risk. The stories occasionally go on too long, but each teenager sends a clear message that escape is possible (though certainly not easy), and the Taylors reinforce the idea with constructive suggestions to help young adults recognize the choices they have. Though there's less about the internal dynamics of dysfunctional families than the title implies, there's still enough to provide a new frame of reference for dealing with personal problems. A simplified but still useful introduction to a complex problem many teenagers face. Appended is a list of hot-line numbers and a disappointing bibliography. Index. ~--Stephanie Zvirin
